History
Probus Clubs were first formed in the early 1920's in Saskatchewan,Canada and in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A, the latter devoted to helping people with mental retardation, phyical disabilities and autism. Because they were not restricted to retired Professional and Business leaders, and had a different objective, they are (were) not associated with our present mainstream of Probus clubs wordwide. The name was fused into a different type of club in England, and the first non-sectarian probus Club specifically for active retirees was formed in 1966 by the Rotary Club if Caterham, England to allow retired professionals to continue to meet together for fellowship. The previous year, the Rotary Club of Welwyn Garden City, England formed the "Campus Club" that had the same purpose. The two soon merged and flourished under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove, Birmingham, In 1974 Probus expanded into New Zealand and by 1976 the idea had spread to Australia. The first Probus club for seniors in North America was sponsored by the Rotary Club in Cambridge, ontario, Canada in 1987. Although Probus membership has its greatest concentrations in Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, clubs today exist in all parts of the world including the U.S., Belgium, India, South Africa and several other countires in Africa and Asia.
CLUB HISTORY
Inauguration of the Probus Club of Newport-on-Tay
The Club was formed because the then Probus Club of North Fife had a waiting list of over twenty and since vacancies arose only in the event of death, resignation or departure from the area, the Rotary Club of North Fife believed there was a need to promote a second Probus Club. On the 19th February 1992 twenty two potential members met to discuss the draft constitution and rules. The inaugural meeting of the Club was held on the 4th March 1992 and the first Chairman and President appointed was Dr Bill Davidson.
On the 18th March 1992 the Club met for the first time in the Recreational Hall of Newport-on-Tay Parish Church.
Last year the Club celebrated it's 30th Year and although we have changed our venue to Drumoig we still have an active membership and continue to have a wide variety of speakers and club outings.
Purpose of our club
The activities of The Club shall mirror those of the worldwide Probus movement. Namely, to offer members a regular programme of invited guest speakers and social activities, in a general atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie
